So here we are, waiting for Wilma. I made reservations at a hotel in Marietta, Georgia, about 12 hours away, but getting there would be a challenge since panic has set in for some folks down here. We're going to ride it out here. Please continue to pray for safety. It's still a bit scary.
I don't have school tomorrow, and probably nor on Monday as Wilma should hit Sunday night. Brad's Friday client ran away and drove up north (though she got only 80 miles in over two hours!), so we have a long weekend. Down here people bolt plywood or metal sheets over their windows and sliding glass doors to protect them from flying debris. There are a variety of things people use for "hurricane shutters"-- plywood and metal sheets like I said, rollaway shutters ($$$), corrugated plastic, corrugated metal, etc. Plywood is the most common as it is readily available and relatively inexpensive, but we decided to go with the corrugated plastic. It has been proven to be as strong and protective as plywood, but is much lighter and easier to install and store. Well, we called to get a quote tonight-- over ELEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. So we ixnay-ed that idea and just got home from Home Depot. We spent about $350 on ten sheets of plywood, nine 2x4's, bolts, and work gloves. Tomorrow we'll be cutting them to size and screwing them into our blemish-free house. Sorry, house.
