So Sunday night was a rough night as I yearned through my Dramamine-induced state to be home. But Monday was a different story.
I had an interview scheduled for 2pm as well as a tentative interview later that day. My 2pm interview was at a group home for developmentally delayed adults, and I learned that this particular group specializes in adults who are severely aggressive, severely self-abusing, and severe property-abusing. So would I like to start out as a direct-care provider at $9 an hour? Um, no thanks. But at least it got me out of the house.
For the second interview I was told to drop by sometime between 1 and 6, so I wasn't sure it was an interview. But it turns out it was. It's at a medical lab about 10 short minutes away which has about 75 employees and one HR person. The HR guy is looking to hire an assistant whom he can train and develop and mentor. I found the job on craigslist at my mother's prompting and the description fit me to a T-- compulsive list person, unusually driven, takes pride in accomplishments, etc. I talked with the guy for two hours and left wanting the job very badly. One fear, though-- if I got this job, I might not want to leave Florida (see how badly I want it?). Brad calmed me down and said we could still sell the house and find an apartment to rent for a while that would be more affordable.
Anyway, the job entails all the things I am good at: event planning, connecting with people and finding ways to boost morale, organizing and even teaching some seminars for continuing education for the scientists, some paperwork, some filing, etc. The pay is a little stinky but the benefits are great and they'll pay for me to get a masters degree! He said he has one more person to interview next Monday but will get back to me mid week. Oh, this could be really good. It's basically a fast track to a great HR career. And, worst case scenario, he said he has contacts in the area so if for some reason the Monday interview is better than me, he'll do what he can to find me a job elsewhere. The chemistry was great and I could tell he was impressed with me, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
And on Monday Brad started his new job. I went to see him on Wednesday and it seems to be a great place to work. The people I met were friendly and seemed sharp, and the place is just right for Brad-- small, educational environment where he can connect with people and make a difference. He's enjoying it so far, except for the exorbitant parking fee. I guess parking is a huge problem on campus so reserved spots cost $450 a year. Yeah, four-fifty. But without that, good luck finding a spot in the morning, or worse, after lunch.
In other news, I mowed 3/4 of the lawn on Tuesday before I and the mower both gave out. The grass was long and it was crazy hot out-- we have this "new" thing down here called RealFeel (aka heat index) on the weather report and this week the RealFeel is in the 100s. I haven't mowed a lawn in 10 years, but despite my lack of practice, the lines were pretty straight, and on top of that, I killed a snake! It was only a foot-long black snake I think-- I didn't stick around to examine the flailing body. Ever run with a mower before?
That's all for now. It's 2:18 p.m. and although I was determined to get caught up on blogging, I'm still in my pj's and it's time to get on to something else.
