Lee County narcotics officers have arrested two Fort Myers physicians for illegally providing medications.

Dr. James Joseph O'Mailia, 53 of 1806 Monte Vista Street, was arrested Thursday night. Dr. Eugene W. Williams, 70, of 301-V South Road, was arrested this morning.

Williams was arrested at Grace Medical around 10 a.m. After police received several complaints about inappropriate prescribing and dispensing of drugs, police obtained several controlled substances, including Hydrocodone and Soma, without medical justification. After a review by the state attorney's office, Williams was arrested and charged with one count of trafficking in illegal drugs, a first-degree felony.

O'Mailia was arrested at his home around 10 p.m. Thursday after deputies were informed by a local pharmacist of altered prescriptions. Investigation showed numerous prescriptions had not been signed by O'Mailia's former business partner, and that O'Mailia had picked up and paid for the fraudulently signed prescriptions. His activities date back as far as March 2004, deputies said. O'Mailia was charged with 13 counts of fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance, a third-degree felony.

O'Mailia's arrest was part of a Pharmaceutical Investigations Law Enforcement Strategy launched in October.
