Some things I know today

1.) I love celery! I rediscovered the joy of celery with peanut
butter today. I ate more celery than I have in months! years,
probably! The key is cutting up the stalks so they are no more than
three inches long-- any longer and it feels like a full-time job
eating that long stalk. But three inches? That's practically
pop-able! I ate a whole big handful of them! So fresh and yummy.

2.) I love midterm week. Optional classes, lots of time to day dream
(I'm totally redesigning my logo. It will include a peony somehow. I'm
giddy just thinking about it.) Lots of time to read ask.metafilter.com
(fun to talk cars with a tv exec in LA-- I suggested an Acura for his
new purchase). Lots of time to walk around campus and enjoy the hot
but not scorching (for once!) weather.

3.) I love crock pots. Tonight's feast is in the crock pot right now.
Eight ounces of cubed beef cut into dice-sized pieces, two large
handfuls of carrot chunks, a handful of celery, half an onion chunked,
water to cover, a blob of beef stock, some soy sauce, dash of
worcestershire, and drop or two of liquid smoke. When I get home I'll
make some mashed potatoes from flakes (don't tell) and layer that all
up-- tatoes, shredded cheese, beef/carrots/onions, gravy, microwaved
French fried onions from the can. And Brad will oooh and ahhh like
always. I think I'll name that my Ego-Booster Pot Roast. Similar to
Shanel's Man-Catcher Cookies. (Or was that Instant Proposal Cookies?
Something like that.)

I think that's about all for today in the good-news department. In
the bad-news department, we just received a call from Shelley. She
was walking Lucy, the ancient (on her last legs) sweet dog of theirs,
when a neighborhood monster-of-a-dog attacked. Lucy protected Shelley
so Shelley was unhurt, but Lucy sustained some serious bites. As Shel
screamed a few neighbors came out to help and one said that his dog
was attacked by this same monster last week... and died today. The
monster is most likely rabid or at least sick of some kind, so the
prognosis for Lucy isn't looking so good. She's at the doggy hospital
right now. Please pray for them-- thanksgiving that Shelley wasn't
injured, and for comfort for her shaken soul. She has been attacked
twice now-- pygmy rattlesnake a few weeks ago (hanging out under her
car door-- lunging at her. She killed it with a shovel and a few good
screams, but man, who needs that?), and now this dumb beast. Lord,
cover them and comfort!
